Squarepusher's 'Eviscerate'.

4 minutes 33 seconds.

from the 'Conumber EP' from 1995.

and 'Burningn'n Tree' from 1997.

file under electronic.

ok, this will be my final "obvious" post. (see the comments of my last post)

this track is more of an exercise in drum programming and pretty much devoid of melody, but there's something about it that makes me happy. it also crushed all other drum and bass music at the time of its release. it's rather quaint by today's standards of course. maybe that's why i like it. the programming is insane and yet there's nothing in the song that sounds like it shouldn't be there.

Plaid's 'Fell'.

4 minutes 23 seconds.

unreleased from 2001.

file under electronic.

according to discogs, this track's only official release was as a bonus track on the japanese version of 'double figure'. for the rest of the world, it can still be found on warp's 'double figure' microsite. there is also an unreleased track called 'awotm' on the 'spokes' microsite.

Spring Heel Jack's 'Root'.

5 minutes 16 seconds.

from Thurston Moore's 'Root' released in 1998.

and Spring Heel Jack's 'Oddities' released in 2000.

file under electronic.

the genesis of this track was a one minute guitar piece by Thurston Moore, which was then transformed by Spring Heel Jack into what we have here. Thurston Moore is of course the guy from Sonic Youth, but this doesn't sound like them. it's also not what you would expect from Spring Heel Jack. they're probably most well known for their earlier drum and bass productions, but their more recent stuff has been more abstract and experimental, and this track is no exception.

Boo Radleys 'Lazarus' remixed by Saint Etienne.

6 minutes 22 seconds.

from Boo Radleys 'Lazarus Remixes' released in 1994.

file under alternative.

a great track by Boo Radleys remixed by a great group - Saint Etienne.

the remix is (almost) unrecognizable compared to the original track, and really doesn't sound like Saint Etienne either - but it's good.

you can tell Saint Etienne must have been listening to a lot of Warp's Artificial Intelligence series at the time.

My Bloody Valentine's 'Map Ref 41°N 93°W'

4 minutes 8 seconds.

from the 'Whore' compilation released in 1996.

file under alternative.

'Whore' was a Wire tribute compilation that featured Godflesh, Lush, Laika, Chris Connelly, Main, Mike Watt, and others. I feel like this version of 'Map Ref 41°N 93°W' is even better than the original. It's one of those songs that gets stuck in your head and won't go away until you listen to it again, and i mean that in a good way of course.

Autechre 'Arch Carrier (Atolyth Remix)'

4 minutes 28 seconds.

original track from 'LP5' 1998.

remix unreleased from 2003?

file under electronic.

this is a bootleg remix that actually sounds like an autechre or gescom remix. but i don't mind because there aren't very many official remixes of autechre, and this particular remix is pretty good.

Aphex Twin 'One (Untitled)'

3 minutes 28 seconds.

unreleased from 1995.

file under electronic.

this is the first track from aphex twin's second peel session. he did two peel sessions (the other in 1992) and maybe someday the bbc / warp / aphex will release them.

the date is wrong on the mp3 - it should say 1995.

Yaz (aka Yazoo) 'Winter Kills'

4 minutes 5 seconds.

from Yaz 'Upstairs At Eric's' 1982.

and Alison Moyet 'Singles' 1995.

and Yaz 'Best Of' 1999.

file under alternative.

well, winter has finally hit Pittsburgh (let's hear it for global warming!) and this is my favorite winter song. it's also one of Yaz's more under-rated songs compared to their big hits 'Situation', 'Don't Go', and 'Only You'.

Plug's 'Versatile'

7 minutes 59 seconds.

from the 'Plug 3 - Versatile Crib Funk EP' released in 1995.

and the 'Drum 'N' Bass For Papa' 2xCD released in 1997.

file under electronic.

the sound fx in this song remind me of new year's eve.

listen all the way through and you'll see what i mean.

update : this is "versatile" and not "tuff rinse"

Orbital's 'Halcyon' probably remixed by Orbital.

6 minutes 32 seconds.

probably from 1992.

file under electronic.

the remix is nothing special but it's not the 7", not the 12", and not the album version (halcyon + on + on) so that's why i'm putting it up.

does anyone know where this version is from?

the Orb's 'Land Of Green Ginger' remixed by Bus.

4 minutes 25 seconds.

from the Meteosound 'Hitek' compilation released in 2004.

and the 'Meteosound Mp3 Compilation' released in 2006.

file under electronic.

it's somewhat rare. it doesn't appear on any orb cd or vinyl.
